Famous Artists that made an impact on the history of art.
We will not attempt to feature all of the famous artists that made an impact on the history of art. This is only a small glimpse at famous artists and their art. Each one has its own character and style. Unique and innovative approach to its subject is what distinguishes these famous paintings and their authors.

Vincent van Gogh
Not everybody knows that Vincent van Gogh painted series of still life paintings with sunflowers theme. There are three alike paintings representing vase with fifteen sunflowers, two similar paintings with twelve sunflowers in a vase, vase with three sunflowers, vase with five sunflowers and also cut sunflowers. As far as being famous artist Vincent van Gogh did not became one until long after his death. His work remained unappreciated for people from his era. Today he is regarded as most influential post-Impressionist artist of the 19th century. The most famous paintings by Vincent van Gogh are:
Sunflowers, The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night, The Starry Night, The Potato Eaters and Wheatfield under a Cloudy Sky.
Claude Monet
Unlike many others Claude Monet was already a famous artist before he died. Together with Auguste Renoir they are recognized as founders of French impressionist painting. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of Monet’s painting Impression, Sunrise. Much of his work was done outdoors – En plein air (French). That was very modern approach at the time. Painter’s wife - Camille Doncieux, was a subject of his most well known works: The Woman in the Green Dress, The Woman in the Garden and On the Bank of the Seine, Bennecourt. Claude Monet was very fond of his flower garden with pond and a bridge. Water Lilies (or Nympheas) from his garden in Giverny were depicted in a series of paintings done throughout last thirty years of his life.
Paul Cezanne
Paul Cezanne was a precursor of modern art. His work distinguishes different approach to space and perspective which laid out foundation for cubist movement. Never satisfied with his work, often would destroy the canvas in frustration. Many of Cezanne’s contemporaries were greatly inspired by his work. Renowned painters like Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque or Juan Gris were inspired and encouraged by this famous artist to seek for a new art venues. One of his favorite subjects was still life, landscapes, portraits and studies of bathers. Paintings like La Montagne St. Victoire and The Card Players stimulated new generation of modern painters.
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest painters of Italian Renaissance, also a sculptor, architect, engineer, musician and scientist. Mona Lisa or La Gioconda fascinates people because of vague expression on Mona Lisa’s face. That enigmatic smile and monumental composition draws attention to the picture. There are countless rumors and speculations on how this painting came about. Another one of his masterpieces is The Last Supper. An epic painting with meticulous attention to detail presenting Jesus and His Twelve Apostles. Famous artist - yes, but a true “Renaissance man” overall.
Pablo Picasso
Born 1881 in Spain, son of a painting professor. Even as a child Picasso showed passion for drawing and received formal artistic education from his father. Always searching for a new artistic ways to express himself, was best known for co-founding the Cubist movement. This famous artist was using broad mixture of styles to express himself. The results were amazing: Guernica, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, The Weeping Woman, The Old Guitarist, Three Musicians, Girl Before a Mirror. Pablo Picasso thought that art should not be scrutinized but felt: “Everyone wants to understand art. Why don’t we try to understand the song of a bird? Why do we love the night, the flowers, everything around us, without trying to understand them? But in the case of a painting, people think they have to understand. If only they would realize above all that an artist works of necessity, that he himself is only an insignificant part of the world, and that no more importance should be attached to him than to plenty of other things which please us in the world though we can’t explain them; people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree.” – Pablo Picasso.
