Pop art emerged in Britain and the United States during the mid 1950s for the former and the late 1950s for the latter. Andy Warhol was one of the pioneers of pop art. With his artistic expression the outlook on art was drastically changed. Of equal importance were Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg just to name a few other pop artists. The main idea behind pop art is to take an object and isolate it from its natural setting or mix it with another object to create two perspectives.
Even though pop art began in UK its range of visual forms was mostly based on American mass-media. So it’s not a surprise that this new art found proper ground in United States. Pop perceives mass culture as raw material, unexhausted source for painting themes. This type of art is considered as the category of contemporary art. Modern art approach had gained respect internationally despite the 'rocky' beginning that it had. To put a twist on things, Andy Warhol drifted from the expressionist view of art and opened the doors of seeing art in a less serious manner. In 1962 whether through inspiration from the tin opener or just outright cleverness, he made 32 paintings of Campbell’s soup cans all looking the same but with different flavor labels. The result was immediate, everybody loved it. And of course Campbell’s took a joy ride on his boat. Afterwards he did the same with other popular objects like Coca Cola bottles and dollar bills. He used images that everyone was accustomed to, to catch people's attention.
His adventure did not stop there. He further started using images of famous people like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley as the representational object and from there different images where created with different colors. Once again, the effect was spectacular. To keep up with demand he printed in silk screens, saving himself the trouble of having to do the same prints repeatedly.
