Despite his rather short life, Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch painter, made significant contributions to the world of art. It was only in 1880 that he embraced working as an artist and from then produced more than 2000 works including sketches and drawings. He had a tragically sad life filled with disappointments that eventually affected his personality. It was believed that being named after his dead brother that was born stillborn had some psychological effect on him and influenced his paintings with references to portrayal of pair of male figures.

Art and religion where the two turning points on which his family based themselves. In his early life he worked in many jobs including sales clerk, teacher, and missionary until be finally settled himself to be an artists with the constant input of his brother Theo and cousin-in-law Anton Mauve. With the influence of his uncle Vincent, he began working for art dealer called Goupil & Cia in July 1869. From there his was transferred to London in 1873 to work with Goupil & Co. His openness and honest expressions of his discomfort of seeing art treated as a commodity caused him to loose his job in on 1 April 1876. From there is worked as a missionary fervent for the cause of Christianity.

Vincent van Gogh began to study and paint many perspectives and Theo was delegated the responsibility of selling most of his paintings. Through hardships and overwork he began to suffer from mental problems. He was admitted in a clinic from which he painted one of his most famous paintings “The Starry Night”. With long years of depression and deepened sadness Vincent van Gogh finally shot himself, at the age of 37. There are many theories surrounding his unexplainable illness, it is believed that it was due to lead poisoning, bipolar disorder, temporal lobe epilepsy , but to date no concrete diagnosis has been given.
